Optimizing AI Max for Search: 3 Core Levers

If you log into your Google Ads account right now, you are probably seeing recommendations to activate AI Max across your Search campaigns. Google's data suggests that accounts turning on AI Max in their Search campaigns typically see 14% more conversions or conversion value at a similar CPA and ROAS. If your campaigns are currently restricted by exact and phrase match keywords, the typical uplift can reach up to 27%.

Those are compelling numbers, but integrating AI Max effectively requires understanding how the system actually operates. AI Max is an optimization layer, not an entirely new campaign type. It generally works best when paired with Smart Bidding and robust conversion tracking.

While the system is designed to find new, profitable traffic, AI Max may expand into search intent that doesn't perfectly align with your specific business goals if your campaigns lack sufficient controls. It is a powerful tool, but it is one that benefits from thoughtful guidance and strategic guardrails. Like any Search campaign, you also want to ensure your budgets have room to accommodate new traffic, as the system works best when it is not heavily budget constrained.

Let's look at how to properly steer this optimization layer using three core levers: search terms and query controls, landing pages and URL expansion, and ad copy and asset strength.

Lever 1: Managing Search Terms and Query Controls

When you flip the switch on AI Max, the system turns on search term matching. This tool taps into broad match, asset-based matching, and landing-page-based (keywordless) matching to stretch your reach.

Instead of rigidly sticking to the old-school exact-to-phrase-to-broad auction hierarchy, AI Max brings in extra AI-based relevance signals to figure out how your ads should match user queries. This is great for grabbing high-intent traffic you might be missing, but you absolutely have to stay in the driver's seat using precision controls.

A quick heads-up on structure: with one specific exception, you'll manage your AI Max controls at the campaign level, not the ad group level.

Search Term Matching Toggles: If a specific campaign needs tight manual matching and the AI expansion is dragging in irrelevant traffic, you have the ability to toggle search term matching off right in your campaign settings.

Brand Settings: You can keep the system's brand associations on track using brand inclusions and brand exclusions. You manage both of these guardrails strictly at the campaign level to ensure the AI fully understands your overarching brand positioning.

Location of Interest: This is the one control you can manage at the ad group level. Available exclusively in AI Max for Search campaigns, this feature lets you target specific customers based on their geographical intent for a specific ad group.

How to Access AI Max Reporting

To make sure your controls are actually working, you should regularly review the reporting tools Google rolled out alongside AI Max.

If you have a developer managing your account programmatically, they’ll use the ai_max_search_term_ad_combination_view API reference to pull performance data for combinations of search terms, headlines, and landing pages into a custom dashboard.

However, you won't find a report with that exact name inside the standard Google Ads interface. If you're doing manual optimizations in the dashboard, you need to look in two separate spots to piece the AI's journey together:

To see the Search Terms & AI Match Types:

  • In your left-hand navigation menu, click on Insights and reports, then click on Search terms.

  • Click the Columns icon and ensure you have the Search term match type column enabled.

  • This column acts as your "source" indicator, showing you if the query was triggered by your exact/phrase keywords, a standard broad match, or the AI Max keywordless expansion.

To see Your AI Ad Combinations:

  • In your left-hand navigation menu, navigate to your Search terms report.

  • Look at the top of the search terms report table. You will see a Search terms dropdown menu.

  • Click that dropdown and select the "Search terms and landing pages from AI Max" view.

  • It lists the exact search terms that triggered your ads alongside the specific AI-generated headlines, landing pages, campaigns, and ad groups that made up the full customer ad journey.

  • By using this specific dropdown view, you can audit the actual "ad recipes" the AI is using for incremental searches to ensure the system is maintaining true relevance when it dynamically selects your URLs and text assets.

Mastering the Expansion with Search Term Insights

When AI Max starts casting a wider net, evaluating individual search queries row-by-row becomes exhausting. To effectively steer the system at scale, you must leverage Search term insights.

Found on the Insights page in your Google Ads interface, this tool uses machine learning to group thousands of individual search queries into overarching themes. Relying on these thematic insights is critical for managing AI Max for several reasons:

Navigating the Privacy Threshold Blind Spot: Google hides a significant portion of low-volume search queries in the standard Search Terms report to protect user privacy. Search term insights bypasses this by grouping these low-volume queries into broader categories. It gives you visibility into aggregate performance data for a theme, shining a light on the "hidden" long-tail traffic the AI is capturing.

Identifying Negative Keyword Themes Faster: Instead of playing whack-a-mole with individual irrelevant search terms, Search term insights allows you to spot entirely irrelevant categories of intent. If you notice an irrelevant search category, you’ll now know what to add as campaign-level negative keywords.

Spotting Emerging Consumer Trends: Because the AI groups queries based on current search behavior, this tool is excellent for spotting shifts in how consumers talk about your products. You might discover a rising sub-category of searches for a specific use-case you never considered, allowing you to capitalize on a new, profitable trend.

Informing Your Ad Copy: The words you use to describe your product are not always the words your customers use to search for it. If your ad copy focuses on "durable construction," but your highest-converting search insight category is themed around "lightweight travel," you know exactly how to pivot your foundational text assets to better feed the generative AI.

Lever 2: Strategic Landing Pages and URL Expansion

As search term matching brings in new queries, the AI attempts to route that traffic dynamically to provide the best user experience.

The asset optimization panel handles this through Final URL expansion. The system evaluates the intent behind a user's search and automatically sends them to a URL on your site that it determines is query-relevant, themed to the ad group, and likely to improve performance.

You can guide this routing by utilizing URL exclusions in your campaign settings. The exact pages you exclude should depend heavily on your specific business model. For an ecommerce site, it might make sense to exclude informational blog posts or out-of-stock category pages. However, if you are running a B2B or SaaS campaign, educational content and comparison pages frequently generate highly qualified leads and should remain eligible.

Review your website carefully and exclude only the pages that you know do not align with the campaign's conversion goals. If you find that the system's dynamic routing doesn't fit your strategy, you always have the option to toggle Final URL expansion off in the campaign settings.

Lever 3: Guiding Ad Copy and Asset Strength

Showing up for new searches is only part of the equation; your ad copy must also match that emerging intent. AI Max uses text customization to adapt your messaging in real time.

Google’s text customization uses your existing ads, landing page content, standard assets, and generative AI to create customized headlines and descriptions. The system does not simply stitch your existing text together literally; it uses multiple contextual signals to generate new, relevant copy designed to capture the user's attention.

To get the best results, you need to provide the system with excellent foundational material. The generative AI pulls from the assets you provide, alongside your website context. Ensure your landing pages feature clear, accurate copy and that your provided static headlines articulate your unique value propositions well.

You also have access to Text Guidelines. These controls allow you to provide messaging guidance, dictate tone, and set restricted words. It is important to note that Text Guidelines specifically affect how the AI generates ad copy, not how the system matches with search queries.

By using this specific dropdown view, you can audit the actual "ad recipes" the AI is using for incremental searches to ensure the system is maintaining true relevance when it dynamically selects your URLs and text assets.

Of course, if you prefer to maintain strict control over your ad copy, you can toggle text customization off.

Operating with Intention

AI Max represents a significant shift in how Search campaigns operate. To safely and effectively maximize your own performance, take the time to set up your campaign-level brand exclusions, tailor your URL targeting to your specific business model, and utilize Text Guidelines to keep your messaging on brand. By putting the right strategic guardrails in place, you allow the system to operate efficiently while keeping your campaigns aligned with your core business objectives.
